#525: quantum of sollazzo – 11 July 2023
The data newsletter by @puntofisso.
Hello, regular readers and welcome new ones :) This is Quantum of Sollazzo, the newsletter about all things data. I am Giuseppe Sollazzo, or @puntofisso. I've been sending this newsletter since 2012 to be a summary of all the articles with or about data that captured my attention over the previous week. The newsletter is and will always (well, for as long as I can keep going!) be free, but you're welcome to become a friend via the links below.
I had my last working day in the NHS last Friday and I'm currently... interrailing :-) You know I'm a big transport geek, and especially a train geek. I'll be posting some photos on this thread as I make my way through Europe, mostly visiting friends.
The most clicked link last week was Reuters' great use of mapping to show the state of the war in Ukraine.
'till next week,
Giuseppe @puntofisso

A fair way (or four) to look at global carbon emissions
Datawrapper's Jack Goodall found a popular emission map a little doubtful, so he set out to try alternative ways to capture the same data.
"When exploring global CO₂ emissions, it’s essential to consider various interpretations of the data. Each approach sheds light on different aspects of the climate crisis, and highlights the complexity and interconnectedness of the issue."

Understanding SVG Paths
A very good, visual, interactive, short but effective tutorial on SVG paths.
Joins 13 Ways
"Relational (inner) joins are really common in the world of databases, and one weird thing about them is that it seems like everyone has a different idea of what they are. In this post I’ve aggregated a bunch of different definitions, ways of thinking about them, and ways of implementing them that will hopefully be interesting."
Hierarchical Representation of UK Geographies (June 2023)
You have probably seen this before. It's the latest iteration of the Office for National Statistics' set of geographical boundaries, from electoral (constituencies, councils, etc) to statistical and beyond.

"The global population milestone of 8 billion represents nearly 7% of the total number of people who have ever lived on Earth."
It's interesting to read the assumptions behind the calculations.
Small multiple maps showing how the heat index has remained in the danger zone for large parts of the southern US
This is a great map for sure, but the best part of it is the fact that Steven Bernard, the FT journalist behind this article's datavis, posted it on Reddit himself.

Why transformative AI is really, really hard to achieve
"In this essay we assemble the best arguments for why transformative AI is hard to achieve. ...Here is a brief outline of our argument:
The transformational potential of AI is constrained by its hardest problems
Despite rapid progress in some AI subfields, major technical hurdles remain
Even if technical AI progress continues, social and economic hurdles may limit its impact"
Hallucinations in AI
"Everything you think you know about AI has been told to you by someone with an incentive to lie (and mostly to themselves)."
Quite a bit to digest here.
