Princeton Comic Makers Weekly Roundup #16

Time Sensitive! Seeking submissions and live artists for June 8 event

The Cotsen Children’s Library is seeking artists to do in-person drawing and/or submit art for an event on June 8, 10:00-2:00, as part of their exhibition “Ulises Carrión: Bookworks and Beyond,” which is about Ulises Carrión’s influence on the book as a medium, material, platform, etc. The Library wants this so that children can see what it’s like to be a working artist. With that in mind, they ask that drawings be G-rated (PG maybe, but not PG-13; here is a breakdown of what these ratings mean). If submitting work, please also only submit a single copy. If doing live drawing, the library is willing to provide materials, but be sure to let us know so that we can let them know. Interacting with children (ie. making art with the children) is okay. Bringing your business card is also okay!

Please bring your submission to our meeting next week, May 29, so that we can deliver it to the Library. The absolute last date is June 8, 9:00 am, the day of the event. If doing live drawing, please confirm your participation by this Friday, May 24. This is quite last minute, so the deadlines are very tight!

Summary of the Last Meeting (5/22/2024)

The Princeton Arts Council is also bringing back their Sketchbook Club! Basically, you can purchase a 30-page sketchbook from them, fill it up however you want, and submit it to their permanent collection for everyone to view. While the Arts Council owns the physical book, you will still retain ownership of the artwork. Definitely feel free to get one for yourselves; it’s fun! We are also considering getting a sketchbook for the whole group that members can pass along to each other. Here’s a quick interest check (just yes or no). Please note that the sketchbook sale ends September 6, and are due October 4.

Reminders

It’s summer! If any of you folks are interested in doing outdoor/plein air hangouts, feel free to shout out your interest. Notably, the Princeton University students will be leaving campus soon, so their campus will be prime real estate shortly…

Bonus

As part of the Cotsen Children's Library exhibit, there were artist talks (no longer available, unfortunately) by visiting artist Alex Turgeon, who was my TA while they were a grad student at Mason Gross. Small world! I just want to give their art a shout out; please check out their work. They’re an interdisciplinary artist who finds overlaps and connections between poetry, architecture, video, and more. I hope they are doing well!
