Princeton Comic Makers Weekly Roundup #14
Before anything else, thank you to everyone who contributed to rent!
We are deeply grateful for the donations, and every bit helps us keep this program running and open to everyone. We’ve currently raised enough to cover half of summer’s rent. If anyone still wants to contribute $15, we will certainly still accept it, but again, no rush and no pressure. Again, Chris’ Venmo is @XtinaCas, and her PayPal is xtinariaa@gmail.com. And of course, please do not feel obligated to give anything!
Summary of the Last Meeting (5/01/2024)
Our space now has wi-fi! The network and password will be displayed and shared in the Communiversity room each session, so those who would like to can now work digitally.
And now that the weather is warming up, outdoor trips or meetups are possible. If you have any interest in or ideas for a group event, definitely feel free to share. Ideal dates would be days other than Wednesday, or the Wednesday of August 7, since we do not have the Communiversity room that day.
Also, normally we just go immediately into working on our own projects. If anyone would like to have a warm-up, let us know! We can hold optional drawing games to get the mind and hands active, such as exquisite corpse.
Graphic Design Portfolio tips from Jim
Jim, who is a professional in Advertising Art Direction, very generously shared tips on building portfolios for graphic design. Thanks Jim!
Making your own projects or coming up with your own branding to “reinvent” preexisting brand identities is a great way to diversify portfolios, especially coming straight out of school
The main skill to demonstrate is technical drawing proficiency or draftsmanship, eg. drawing by hand, hand-written type, etc.
Additional non-draftsmanship skills are still helpful and make your skillset unique
Also note that Graphic Design and Art Direction are different. Basically Art Directors create the early vision (early drafts), whereas Graphic Designers carry out the vision to completion
And in general, be wary out there! Don’t trust employers who call the team “family,” and if something better shows up, don’t feel bound to your current job out of loyalty.
