Princeton Comic Makers Weekly Roundup #1

Summary of the Last Meeting (1/31/24)

Not much to say! We said hi, we drew, there was much discussion of SCAD... We also went through the general structure of each meeting, in which we introduce ourselves, draw for about an hour-and-a-half-ish, and then share our work. That was our first crit/sharing session, which is very exciting, and we would like to say thank you to all who presented work! Things were a little loosely structured since that was our first time, which brings us to the next point!

Next Week

We're hoping to bring a bit more structure and outline some guidelines for conduct both in general and during crit sessions. We highly encourage that you bring any thoughts, preferences, concerns, and so forth with you; this space is meant to serve you, so we'd love to hear your voices! If you are uncomfortable bringing things up yourself, you can contact us (Masha, Chris, and Suyang) at princetoncomicmakers@gmail.com, and we can broach your ideas for you.

To get your thoughts going, here are some examples of things to discuss:

  • Table arrangements

  • Acceptable background noise, noise levels, etc.

  • Changes to our meeting structure (eg. handle intros differently, dedicate time to talking about specific things like conventions or sharing inspirations, etc.)

  • When to start crit sessions, and ways to stay on time

  • What order to show our work in (eg. clockwise, whoever volunteers next, etc.)

  • Ways to make sure feedback is on topic (eg. stating at the beginning what sort of feedback you want/do not want)

Opportunities

For the cartoonists among us, here are some comic residencies currently taking applications:

  • Trailer Blaze Residency

    • Seaview, WA; 1 week in April

    • Deadline February 29

  • Highlights Foundation Working Retreat: Novelists and Graphic Novelists

    • Milanville, PA; May 19-22

    • Fills up first come first serve

  • Comic Art Workshop 2024

    • Bundanon, Australia; October 1-13

    • Deadline March 1

Reminders

Two things: We want to use this space to highlight each others' projects. If there is something you would like us to share in these emails, please let us know!

Secondly, while we technically have that upstairs room until 9:30, the Arts Council is staying open late to accommodate us, so out of consideration we would like to be done with everything around 9:00 and reserve those last 30 minutes for clean up.
