#241 Never on rails
Deep-fried. Brain-fried. Free-styled.
28 OCTOBER 2026
Hello.
I’m in an airport.
This is an airport newsletter.
Even more excitingly it’s a LATE NIGHT AIRPORT NEWSLETTER.
Will anything I type make sense?
Perhaps I’ll start weeping openly about how much fun I had in Winnipeg?
Old friends reunited. New friends found.
And I ate a deep-fried peanut butter cup.
And when I say one, I mean three.
Rule of three

[Food] Deep-fried peanut butter cups
They are like normal peanut butter cups but crucially warmer, more squidgy and SOMEHOW even more tasty. I imagine they are pretty good for you too. You can get them at Dreamland, which is owned and run by Kevin who is also a REALLY BRILLIANT improviser.

[Film] You Can See Everything
Nathan Fielder and Elizabeth Holmes. It’s not possible to take either of these people at face value. So watching a documentary featuring both of them raises more questions than it answers. Seriously, I have a lot of questions now. One of them is WAS ANY OF THAT REAL? And then there’s a star turn in the second half that derails reality even further. And, as I said, it was never on rails in the first place. Anyway, I adored it.

[Podcast] Flow State
Love me some Harry Mack. I don’t think anyone comes close to him in terms of improvised freestyle rap. His podcast Flow State is about creativity and self-expression and it made me take lots of notes and be inspired about creating new things again. And then at the end he does like a TEN MINUTE freestyle about all the topics that were covered in the episode. He is breathtaking.
Spotlight

We’re doing a new show at South London Theatre (SLT).
Firstly, it’s a theatre in an old fire station - so that’s probably enough info for you to just buy a ticket, right?
But if you MUST know more - we’re doing a new thing called Duo Roulette. The idea is we invite loads of incredibly talented improvisers, and then make them do duo sets, but they won’t know who they’re going to perform with until they step onto the stage. We already have a stacked cast - Lee Simpson, Jenny Rowe, Liz Peters, Anasuya Sharma, Victor Arcturus Estrella, Ed Fargher, Lottie Clitherow, Sai Kamasetti and Tom Mathias. PLUS another set from The Pretend Company ensemble.
We’re really excited and quite chuffed at our clever new format. Come and see the very first one.
Longform thoughts
There’s no way to intellectualise that process in the moment, we can’t brute force think our way through it. Just as the raw maths of where to move your hand to catch a ball that’s barreling towards your head would be impossible for the average human to write out long hand. And yet, most of us still catch the ball.
This week, we come to the fourth pillar of movement theory - which is, quite thrillingly, Improvisation. Join me as I attempt to articulate how improvisation is a metaphor for improvisation.

Radio is going full diva at this pumpkin patch.
