#223 Mostly about A4

Book. Paper. Singers.

24 JUNE 2026

Argh!

It’s too hot.

I’m melting.

Even typing is too much work.

Rule of three

A book cover with big red letters - The Courage to Be Disliked.

[Book] The Courage to be Disliked
For various reasons (lol), I’ve been confronted recently by the fact that not everyone likes me. And (perhaps even more importantly) that this is not necessarily a bad thing. This book is my first step on the journey to understanding my people-pleasing nature and what can be done about it. It’s based on the work of Alfred Adler and the part that really resonated with me was the idea that we should live our lives in service to our community. And not expect any kind of recognition or reward. In fact, the service itself is the reward.

I am still working on it.

Tom Bacon with a German flag.

[Paper] Tom Bacon
Brilliant improv technician and awesome person Tom Bacon, has recently gone viral with this video about paper. It is not only genuinely interesting, it is funny too. And, as I said, it’s mostly about A4. Well done, Tom.

Some earnest young people put their hands up in the air whilst singing.

[Music] Nor’easters
I am obsessed with a cappella music because it seems to me that the people who do it are both the nerdiest AND the coolest people in the world simultaneously. Everyone is so goddamn sincere and you sort of watch through your fingers but end up admitting that they are all spectacularly talented. Also, I thought Pitch Perfect was exaggerating how complex an a cappella performance was, but on the evidence of this year’s ICCA winning entry, I think the Barden Bellas need to watch their backs.

This Saturday 27th June 2026, the Geekeasy is returning to the Hoopla stage and I COULD NOT be more excited.

Geekeasy was a night that I ran with my Project2 buddies, Katy Schutte and Jonathan Monkhouse, for many years. Every month we would choose another nerdy topic and plan a whole night of entertainment around it.

We’re bringing it back for ONE NIGHT ONLY as part of Hoopla’s 20th Anniversary celebrations and the topic this time is MUSIC. It’s a bittersweet occasion for us, we’re really stoked to be back together but this will also be the last show our longtime collaborator and musician, Fred Deakin (of Club Life and Lemon Jelly fame) will perform with us.

If you’ve never seen Fred underscore an improv show, it really is something else. He combines beats, samples and effects to create a full-blooded cinematic masterpiece of underscoring. Worth the price of admission alone.

But astoundingly, you get WAY more than that for your money. We have improv music supergroup My Sons playing, as well as our classic game, PRESENTATION WARS and a full sci-fi set by Project2 (although we’re a duo nowadays).

AND Tom Bacon (of A4 paper fame) is going to be our technician and he is astounding.

That’s A LOT of improv for £10.
