#208 Let the young people do all the kicking
Magic. Words. Extraordinary. Improv.
25 FEBRUARY 2026
Morning, people who read this immediately.
Good day, everyone else.
And thank you to all of you who came out for the world-premiere of What We Leave Behind. It was wonderful to see so many of you in the audience. We actually sold out our cosy little venue, two out of the three nights. We’re really honoured by your support and hope to do more shows in the near future.
It was an astonishing group of artists to work with and the process of putting it together was really meaningful and exhilarating for me.

Rule of three

[TV] Small Prophets
A new BBC sitcom by Mackenzie Crook. There is quiet magic here. I don’t want to speak too much about it, lest I somehow break the spell. But it’s filled with beauty and warmth and it’ll make you laugh tears of joy.

[Game] Infinite Word Search
An infinitely scrollable word search which everyone on the internet is playing simultaneously in real time. People have actually started making images composed of found words if you zoom out far enough. This is what the internet should be for.

[Movies] Late-stage Jackie Chan
How does a superstar who is known primarily for feats of physical prowess go about making a film in his 70s? Slow down? Take on a role that is mostly dialogue-focussed and let the young people do all the kicking? If you’re Jackie Chan, the answer is no, just continue to be extraordinary. I’ve watched The Foreigner and The Shadow’s Edge this week with my jaw hanging open. It’s incredible to see Jackie still spinning about the place with all his grace and comic timing intact. And on a personal note - with the world changing so fast and not always for the better - I’m particularly grateful to still see the words "a new Jackie Chan movie” as I ease into my late forties. It just does me good to know he’s still out there somewhere, beating people up with a scaffold pole.
Spotlight

I’m playing a Stand By Me-themed character in the 50 Hour London Improvathon this weekend. My shift runs from the start until 11am on the Saturday. Please come and see me if you can, the overnight pricing is very innovative this year - you pay the cash amount for the time you start watching - so the 1am show is £1.
And BONUS content, The Pretend Company is performing at the FA, this Saturday night. Eagle-eyed readers will notice this doesn’t really give me time to sleep. So come and watch my fellow Pretenders carry me (perhaps literally) through that show too. I do some of my best work when I’m out of my mind.
