Observations

Today's setup: Friday's session delivered the week's defining verdict: AI money is migrating from the companies spending it to the companies supplying it. NASDAQ fell 2.78%, Tesla crashed 16.3%, Meta dropped 5.1%, and semiconductors (SMH −4.38%) followed the hyperscalers lower — all while Taiwan's TAIEX gained 5.1% on the week and Korea's KOSPI added 4.1%, powered by a cascade of mega-deals funneling hundreds of billions into Samsung and SK Hynix. The FOMC meeting next week adds a layer of uncertainty nobody can price precisely, and VIX's mild pullback (-0.64%) contrasts sharply with a NASDAQ-vol index (VXN) that spiked over 6%.

The core tension this week was the AI capex dichotomy. For the hyperscalers — companies like Meta, Alphabet, and the data-center operators building out AI infrastructure — the sustained capital expenditure is a structural drag on free cash flow. The market punished this again on Friday. But that same spending flows directly to the memory chipmakers (Samsung, SK Hynix), foundries (TSMC), and GPU suppliers (Nvidia). The $200 billion Samsung-Broadcom foundry deal, the $750 billion SK-Nvidia chip commitment, and the Korean presidential advisor's mention of a $1.3 trillion combined chip alliance all landed this week — a once-in-a-generation industrial shift being priced in real-time. The picks-and-shovels side of this trade is in Asia, not Silicon Valley.

Geopolitics added a second narrative. Houthi attacks on Saudi Aramco sites in Jizan and Yanbu pushed crude oil up more than 7% on the week, even as Friday saw a partial pullback (−3.1%) as the immediate premium cooled. Ukraine simultaneously struck Russian oil platforms in the Caspian, broadening the supply-disruption risk. Crude is back above $89 — a level that historically begins to feed into transportation costs and eventually core inflation, though the lag is typically several months. OVX (crude implied volatility) is up nearly 15% on the week, signaling options markets are pricing more upside risk to oil.

Equity rotation within the US was textbook defensive repositioning. As tech sold off, healthcare (+2.0%), industrials (+2.1%), real estate (+2.1%), insurance (+2.2%), homebuilders (+1.7%), and REITs (+1.8%) all gained. When longer-dated Treasury yields tick down even modestly — the 10-year fell roughly 2 basis points to 4.68% on Friday — duration-sensitive sectors like REITs and real estate feel the relief immediately through discount-rate mechanics. The curve remains upward-sloping (5Y at 4.43%, 10Y at 4.68%, 30Y at 5.16%) with no inversion signal.
