Daily Market Brief — 2026-07-31

Before the bell rings — here's the tape.

VIX normal (17.23); SPX +6.0% above its 200-day SMA; NASDAQ +2.78% leads US indices on mega-cap earnings beats (Amazon cloud surge, Apple AI pivot); SMH +6.88% / XLK +5.50% top sectors on historic AI-chip demand; KOSPI +17.91% (South Korea's biggest single-day rally on record); META −7.95% drags Communication Services; Fed dissenters (Kashkari calling for +25bps) push the 10-year yield to 4.70%, its highest level in nearly a year.

Observations

Today's setup: The session opens with two competing forces in an arm-wrestling match: a hawkish Fed shock (Kashkari formally dissented for a 25-basis-point hike, while employment costs came in above forecast) is pushing yields toward year-long highs — the 10-year at 4.70%, the 30-year essentially touching its 52-week peak. Yet mega-cap earnings (Amazon's blowout cloud quarter, Apple's AI-focused final call under Tim Cook) are powerful enough to drag equities higher anyway, with the NASDAQ up nearly 3% and the S&P above its 200-day moving average by 6%. The market is sorting out whether this is a last earnings-cycle gasp before rates reassert themselves, or whether AI-driven capex is durable enough to override the rate headwind.

The AI chip demand story is the clearest signal of the morning. South Korea's stock market posted its single largest single-day gain ever recorded — driven by semiconductor giants at the center of global AI hardware supply — and Taiwan's tech-heavy index followed with nearly an 8% surge. This is not a coincidence: South Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers sit at the top of the AI chip supply chain (HBM memory, advanced logic), so rallies of this magnitude are a real-world demand signal from the ground up, not just narrative. US semiconductor stocks are following suit with SMH up nearly 7%.

The divergence to watch is yields-versus-equities. Historically, when a Fed official formally dissents in favor of a rate hike — especially alongside an employment cost beat — the pattern is clear: front-end yields rise, the curve flattens, and duration-sensitive sectors (real estate, utilities, consumer staples) come under pressure. That part is working exactly as expected today: XLRE −1.44%, XLU −0.56%, XLP −2.16%, homebuilders −1.15%. The surprise is that growth tech is not just holding up but surging. The most likely explanation is that bond markets are repricing the path, not the terminal rate — investors are buying the idea that we may stay higher for longer without a catastrophic peak, which allows multiple expansion in AI-linked names even as rates rise.

Meta's −7.95% decline is the session's idiosyncratic story and warrants attention as a caution signal. The stock is now sitting just 7% above its 52-week low — a level that suggests earnings disappointment rather than macro rotation. Communication services is the weakest sector at −2.68%, entirely Meta-driven. In contrast, Tesla bounced 3.5% after Musk explicitly denied China-business-sale and SpaceX-merger rumors, clearing a cloud of speculation that had weighed on the stock. Crude oil's +2.44% move — with Exxon's CEO citing persistently elevated gasoline prices — adds an inflation-forward dynamic that strengthens the case for the Fed hawks.
