Observations

Today's setup: The dominant driver is a geopolitical escalation in the Gulf — US naval forces fired on a ship near Iranian ports, triggering the classic risk-redistribution pattern: gold spiked +2.07% to $4,452 (gold volatility surged +8.81%), oil services led equities with OIH +5.94% and XOP +5.73%, while the broader S&P barely moved (-0.06%). Treasuries caught a mild safe-haven bid (10Y yield edged down ~1.5 basis points to 4.69%), but the DXY was essentially flat, suggesting no major dollar flight. Sentiment sits at 65/100 (Greed on the CNN Fear & Greed scale), implying the market is treating the incident as contained rather than systemic.

Geopolitical shocks — when confined to an oil-producing region — follow a predictable channel: energy stocks, gold, and defense proxies benefit immediately, while the broader inflation picture comes into focus only as the oil move persists. Oil has already gained nearly 10% over the past week, and if that sustains, it reopens the question of whether the Fed can ease as quickly as the bond market expects. The bond strategist survey published today (10Y forecast: 4.50% in three months) assumes a benign inflation path — crude staying elevated would challenge that assumption directly.

Healthcare was the other notable winner today, with XLV gaining +1.67% to approach its 52-week high. The sector's outperformance when tech softens has been a recurring pattern this year: when sentiment around growth tech shifts defensive, healthcare absorbs the rotation given its relatively stable earnings profile. Biotech (IBB +1.17%) is simultaneously near its own annual high. The mirror of this move was semiconductors — SMH fell -2.28% even as TSMC approved a massive $29.4 billion capital expenditure. The capex approval signals strong forward demand, but TSMC's concurrent disclosure of revenue uncertainty in 2028-29 (when AI investments need to prove returns) capped any positive reaction and handed the technicals back to the bears.

The most unusual cross-signal today is the home builders ETF ITB falling -2.72% on a day when long-end yields were essentially flat (30Y unch, 10Y -1.5bps). The usual mechanism — higher mortgage rates pressure builder activity — isn't in play today by the yield numbers alone. The more likely explanation is that markets are pre-positioning for CPI, where a week of rising crude prices could print a higher-than-expected reading and delay the rate-cut path the housing sector has been pricing in. A Wall Street bank flagging a "sell trigger at the highest level in eight years" heading into CPI reinforces that hedging posture.
