Observations

Today's setup: A Canada-US trade-war escalation — 50% tariffs on Canadian goods effective today, with negotiations collapsed — dominated Friday's session. Gold surged +3.64% to $4,680 as trade uncertainty drove safe-haven flows, metals and materials led the tape (XME +4.05%, GDX +2.98%, XLB +2.14%), and grain futures spiked on supply-chain fears. Yet equity markets remained surprisingly composed: the VIX fell to 15.13 (its calmest reading in weeks), SPX ticked up +0.43%, and the Dow gained +0.98%. The S&P 500 sits 8.2% above its 200-day moving average.

When governments impose tariffs, economic research is clear on who pays: it's typically the importing country's businesses and consumers, not the exporters. With Canada supplying critical agricultural inputs — potash for fertilizers, aluminum, energy — 50% tariffs on Canadian goods raise production costs across American agriculture and manufacturing. Friday's session made this visible in real time: corn futures surged 6.2% to a 52-week high, wheat rose 2.4%, and the agribusiness ETF (MOO) gained 2.0%. Markets appear to be pricing in supply disruption and front-running stockpiling ahead of the tariff's effective date.

Gold's rally is notable precisely because it contradicts the standard playbook. Normally, rising Treasury yields put pressure on gold by increasing its opportunity cost — yet Friday saw yields rise (10-year at 4.738%, just below its 52-week high) alongside a sharp gold surge. This is the same decoupled behavior that has defined the 2025-2026 gold market, where trade-war uncertainty and questions about dollar-reserve status appear to be driving a safe-haven premium that overrides the rate signal. The orderly nature of the rally — gold volatility (GVZ) barely moved — suggests institutional accumulation rather than panic.

NVDA reports earnings this Wednesday after hours (Aug 26), with the options market pricing in a ±5.2% move. The context heading in is constructive: TSMC reported a 45% jump in quarterly sales this week, citing robust AI demand and raising its full-year capital-expenditure guidance — a direct upstream confirmation for NVDA's data-center business. Morgan Stanley reset its NVDA forecast Friday. Semiconductor ETF (SMH) was flat to slightly negative on the day, suggesting the market is in a wait-and-see posture rather than pre-positioning aggressively — the AI-spend broadening narrative will be tested by the actual results.
