Observations

Today's setup: Markets are holding their ground despite a dual central-bank hawkish signal: the Fed's Goolsbee flagged inflation as the top near-term risk, and ECB minutes point toward another rate hike. Yet yields barely moved — the 10-year added just one basis point to 4.668% — and the S&P 500 is essentially flat. The standout of the session is not in equities at all but in soft commodities, where coffee futures are down nearly 14% and grain markets are surging more than 3% — moves that dwarf anything in stocks today.

The central-bank tone is hawkish but not alarming. When a Fed official warns about inflation without triggering a bond sell-off, it typically means the market is already pricing a "higher for longer" path and has absorbed the message. The yield curve remains upward-sloping — five-year at 4.39%, ten-year at 4.67%, thirty-year at 5.19% — which is the normal posture for an economy where the long run looks fine even if the near term stays tight. Jobless claims at 203,000 undershot expectations and reinforce that the labor market is not cracking under higher rates.

The AI infrastructure story is accelerating on two fronts. Quarterly earnings from Nvidia, CrowdStrike, Okta, and Salesforce all beat expectations, and a fresh industry estimate puts cumulative AI infrastructure spending above $1.3 trillion by 2027. Taiwan Semiconductor's win of new 3-nanometer AI chip work is consistent with the thesis that TSMC is cementing its role as the essential supplier in this cycle. The semiconductor sector (SMH) is essentially flat on the day, which likely reflects the fact that much of this good news was already priced in.

Coffee futures deserve a note. A nearly 14% single-session drop is rare. Coffee prices are notoriously volatile because production is concentrated in a small number of countries — Brazil above all — and prices can spike or crash sharply on any weather or supply signal. The August seasonal pattern historically leans long for coffee, making today's crash an outlier worth monitoring: either a significant supply-normalization or a forced unwind of speculative positioning. Grain markets (corn and wheat each up nearly 3%) are moving in the opposite direction for equally unclear reasons — no specific harvest or weather news appears in today's feed, but both contracts are at multi-year highs in their 52-week range.
