Observations

Today's setup: Friday's session closed with stocks broadly higher despite what Wall Street analysts called a "nothing to like" July jobs report — a pattern where soft employment data raises expectations for near-term Federal Reserve rate cuts, lifting equities even as the underlying labor-market read disappoints. Gold and gold miners led the week decisively (gold +1.36%, miners ETF +7.11%), while energy lagged even as geopolitical disruptions continued in the Red Sea and Ukraine. China printed weak July inflation data — PPI falling — which extends the deflationary signal from the world's second-largest economy.

The gold complex's behavior is notable. Miners carry roughly 1.5–2.5× operational leverage to the metal's price moves, because their fixed costs stay constant while revenue swings with gold. This week miners ran at a higher-than-typical multiple to physical gold, suggesting markets are pricing in sustained bullion strength. That's consistent with a world where the Fed is expected to ease, real yields are soft, and geopolitical uncertainty remains elevated.

The China deflation dynamic deserves attention. Chinese producer prices falling into negative territory means goods manufactured there become cheaper to import globally, which historically feeds into lower consumer goods inflation in the US and Europe over the following one to two quarters. This is a structural disinflationary push through the goods component of CPI — and it supports the case for Fed cuts without requiring domestic demand destruction. The market's "bad macro is good equities" reaction to the NFP report fits precisely this framework: the terminal rate is unchanged, the cut path is just getting more data to move forward.

Tech and semiconductors held well (SMH +1.96%, XLK +1.42%), supported by continued AI-capex positioning — underscored by Ark Invest buying into TSMC and Nvidia after Meta's earnings miss. The energy sector's muted reaction to Houthi port attacks and ongoing Russia-Ukraine strikes is a divergence worth watching; historically, Red Sea corridor disruptions translate to freight cost pressures over weeks, not immediately.
