Daily Market Brief — 2026-07-08
Before the bell rings — here's the tape.
VIX 17.43 normal (+8.06%); SPX +7.9% above its 200-day SMA — but a semiconductor-led risk-off tape: NASDAQ −1.16%, SMH −3.78%, KOSPI −5.35%, while energy bucks the trend (XLE +2.84%, WTI +3.89%, OVX +18%).

Observations
Today's setup: A semiconductor-led risk-off is running through global equities. The AI-hardware trade that carried indices to record highs is unwinding — Taiwan Semiconductor is off more than 4%, the semiconductor basket (SMH) is down almost 4%, the Nasdaq has shed over 1%, and Asian tech took the brunt overnight, with South Korea's KOSPI down 5.4% and Japan's Nikkei off 2.1%. Treasury yields firmed across the curve, with the 30-year back above 5%; the dollar held flat; and crude oil jumped nearly 4% as fresh Middle-East escalation revived a supply-risk premium. The result is a textbook rotation — capital left growth and cyclicals for defensives and energy — while the VIX rose 8% but stayed inside a still-normal range.
The sell-off is concentrated where the AI build-out is most exposed. When hyperscaler capital-spending momentum cools, the demand shock is amplified as it travels upstream — from cloud operators to chip designers to the equipment makers that supply the fabs — so a modest cooling at the top shows up as an outsized move in names like TSMC and the equipment vendors (KLA, Lam Research). The same channel explains why tech-heavy Asian markets led the decline: economies whose export base is concentrated in semiconductors and AI hardware, such as South Korea and Taiwan, tend to swing more violently than the broad market on these turns. One exception stood out — Meta rose more than 2.5%, bid on a "superintelligence" summer-rebound narrative even as the rest of big tech fell.
Underneath the equity move, long-term interest rates are doing quiet damage. With the 30-year yield back above 5% and the whole curve a touch higher, the premium investors demand to hold stocks over bonds compresses, which weighs most on the longest-duration, highest-multiple corners of the market — precisely the growth and semiconductor names leading the drop. The mirror image was a bid for safety: health care, staples, utilities, real estate and biotech all closed higher, and regional banks were quiet — signs this is a rotation, not a credit event.
Energy was the day's clear winner. Renewed escalation around Iran and the Gulf — airport closures in Hormozgan and Saudi diplomatic friction — rebuilt a geopolitical risk premium into crude, which rose almost 4% and pulled oil-services and exploration shares up with it; oil's implied-volatility gauge jumped 18%, the loudest move on the board. Costlier energy also feeds the inflation-reacceleration worry the IMF cited as it trimmed 2026 global growth to 3.0% and lifted its inflation call to 4.7%. Precious metals, notably, did not act like a haven: gold fell over 1% and silver nearly 3%, with the miners down harder. The driver is rising real yields — when inflation-adjusted bond returns climb, the opportunity cost of holding a metal that pays nothing rises — compounded today by news that the ECB pared its gold reserves.
