Before the bell rings — here's the tape.
VIX 16.38 (+3.61%) — a normal-volatility read. The S&P 500 sits +7.78% above its 200-day average. It's a rotation day: the Dow rose +1.14% to a fresh 52-week high while the Nasdaq fell −0.80% and semiconductors dropped −4.54% — money moving out of technology and into defensives as yields ease and gold bids.

Observations
Today's setup: Money is rotating hard out of technology and into everything defensive. The Dow pushed to a fresh 52-week high (+1.14%) while the Nasdaq slipped (−0.80%) and the semiconductor group was routed (−4.54%), after Morgan Stanley flagged fading chip-stock momentum and a $28 billion SK Hynix US listing stirred memory-supply concerns. Treasury yields eased across the curve, gold and gold miners rallied, and the dollar firmed — the footprint of investors trimming risk in one corner of the market rather than a broad growth scare, since small-caps and bank/credit measures stayed comparatively calm. Volatility ticked higher (VIX near 16.4) but held a normal band, and CNN's sentiment gauge sits in "Fear."
The selloff had a clear internal logic. As the largest cloud platforms design more of their own silicon, demand for merchant chip suppliers becomes increasingly self-limiting — and the same AI-spending boom that lifts memory and equipment makers is a cash-flow drag on the hyperscalers doing the spending. The market leaned into that split today: chips and mega-cap technology were sold hard, even where the company news was good. TSMC fell 2.3% despite a Citi price-target increase heading into its earnings, and Tesla dropped 7.5% even as it expanded its robotaxi service to Miami — a sign that broad de-risking, not individual headlines, drove the tape.
With yields falling — and falling fastest at the short end — the parts of the market that compete with bonds for income did best. Utilities, consumer staples and real estate advanced, alongside health care and insurance, several of which finished near 52-week highs. Gold and gold miners climbed even as the dollar strengthened; when bullion and miners rise together without a weaker dollar, that usually reflects defensive positioning rather than a currency move, and a dollar that firms while yields fall points to safe-haven demand rather than a rate story.
Crude eased after Saudi Aramco announced its deepest official selling-price cut since 2000 and the UAE lifted output to near-record levels — a supply signal that is mildly disinflationary and weighed on energy shares. In a separate move, soft commodities jumped: cocoa rose 8.4%, coffee 5.1% and grains roughly 3%, driven by weather and supply factors specific to those markets rather than the broader macro backdrop.
