Observations
Today's setup: The dominant story is a two-way tug: strong US labor and productivity data (jobless claims beat, productivity +1.4%) keep the Fed on hold longer and compress rate-cut expectations, while simultaneously a Houthi escalation signal drove gold sharply higher — GLD +4.14%, GDX +7.39%. The unusual feature is that gold is surging but oil isn't, which splits the typical geopolitical risk playbook. Equity markets are broadly range-bound (SPX −0.17%, Dow +0.49%), with meaningful dispersion under the surface.
The gold miners surge (+7.39% for GDX) is well above the physical gold move (+1.76% for futures) — a textbook reflection of miners' operational leverage: with largely fixed cost bases, a gold price rise amplifies directly into mining margins. Gold volatility (GVZ +8.89%) spiked on the size of the move. This is commodity stress, not equity stress — VIX barely moved (+0.25%), and the Fear & Greed index sits at 60 (Greed), suggesting equity markets are largely unconcerned.
The AI spending divide is playing out in real time. Meta's free cash flow plunged 91% quarter-over-quarter as its AI capital expenditure program ballooned, a reminder that the companies writing the biggest AI cheques are absorbing significant profitability headwinds. Meanwhile Taiwan Semiconductor raised its 2026 revenue outlook, citing accelerating AI chip demand — the classic picks-and-shovels beneficiary on the other side of the same trade. This dynamic — hyperscaler spenders penalized, chip-and-infrastructure suppliers rewarded — has been the consistent pattern through the 2024–2026 AI investment cycle.
South Korea's KOSPI fell 4.58%, the sharpest single-session decline in the region. Given Korea's semiconductor supply-chain dominance (Samsung, SK Hynix), KOSPI weakness has historically transmitted into US chip stocks within the same session. Today that transmission was notably muted — US semiconductor ETF (SMH) fell only 1.04%, well below the historical 7–10% amplification pattern. Whether this reflects US market resilience, the TSM guidance raise absorbing the shock, or simply a delay ahead of the open remains to be seen.
