Weekend tape — here's what's worth your time.

VIX 15.81 — normal regime; SPX +7.8% above its 200-day SMA. KOSPI +5.76% led global indices in Friday's session while the Dow closed Thursday (July 2, the last US session) at a 52-week high (+1.14%); the sector story: semiconductors −4.54% against health care +2.63% at a 52-week high — a hard rotation out of chips and into defensives.

Observations

Today's setup: US markets are closed for the long Independence Day weekend — the data below reflects Thursday's US close (July 2) and Friday's overseas sessions (July 3). Thursday was a rotation day, not a risk-off day: the Dow rose 1.14% to a 52-week high while the NASDAQ fell 0.80% and semiconductors dropped 4.5%, with health care, biotech, insurance and utilities pushing to or near 52-week highs. Gold added 1.8% with miners up 4.5%, and the S&P 500 sits 7.8% above its 200-day average. Volatility tells the same story from another angle: S&P implied volatility is a calm 15.8 while NASDAQ implied volatility holds near 28 — the stress is concentrated in one corner of the market, not spread across it.

The corner under stress is AI hardware. Hyperscaler capital spending is simultaneously a cost line for the spenders and the revenue line for their suppliers, so when the durability of that spending is questioned, both legs reprice at once — and this week supplied the doubt. Zuckerberg conceded Meta's AI-reorganization goals "haven't come to fruition," Meta is weighing selling excess data-center compute, and reports have Meta considering a $6.5 billion chip order shift to Samsung. Suppliers took the hit: SanDisk fell 14% in a day, a 3× leveraged semiconductor ETF now sits 43% below its high, and the semiconductor ETF complex lost 4.5% in the session while software, health care and financials absorbed the outflows. The counter-signal came Friday from Asia: Korea's KOSPI jumped 5.8% on the Samsung order news. Monday will show whether US chips follow Korea up, or Korea follows US chips down.

Beneath that, the internals look like rotation rather than exit. The Dow printing a record close on the same day technology falls means money is moving down the risk curve within equities, not out of them: health care closed effectively at a 52-week high, biotech and insurance a hair behind, utilities and staples firmly bid. Leadership broadening away from the mega-cap growth trade is a late-cycle breadth pattern — historically more consistent with a maturing bull market than a topping one. Two tensions are worth carrying into next week: CNN's Fear & Greed gauge reads 32 ("Fear") against record index prices, and regional banks slipped 1.5% on the sell-off day — bank stability during a tech drawdown is what usually separates a sector rotation from something systemic, so that group's behavior Monday matters more than usual.

Gold's advance came with an unusual pair of companions: a dollar near its 52-week high — which normally weighs on dollar-priced metals — and gold-market volatility falling 4%, the signature of orderly accumulation rather than panic buying. The geopolitical tape supplied the bid: Ukraine struck oil and defense targets near St. Petersburg, a Russian drone hit gas production in Poltava, France is keeping mine-countermeasure ships deployed to secure Strait of Hormuz shipping, and Fitch flagged the fragile 60-day Middle East framework as a live risk to corporate borrowers. Gold miners outrunning the metal (+4.5% vs +2.0%) has a second engine besides leverage to the gold price: crude is down almost 3% on the week, and energy is one of a mine's largest operating costs — falling input costs against a rising output price widen margins twice over.
