Daily Market Brief — 2026-06-14

Weekend tape — here's what's worth your time.

Risk-on into the weekend. At Friday's close (June 12), the VIX sat in its normal range at 17.68 (−9.05%), and the S&P 500 was +8.0% above its 200-day average. Asian technology led the world higher — KOSPI +4.63% (+8.5% on the week) — and gold miners (GDX +2.97%) paced US sectors, while US large-caps firmed (S&P 500 +0.50%, Dow +0.70%). A blockbuster SpaceX debut and a draft US–Iran sanctions deal framed the tape.

Observations

Today's setup: The week ended (Friday, June 12) in a broad, low-volatility risk-on. Asian technology indices led the world higher, Europe firmed, and US large-caps drifted up — while the VIX fell about 9% to 17.68, comfortably inside its normal range, and the S&P 500 held roughly 8% above its 200-day average. Three forces frame the tape: surging AI-hardware demand, a blockbuster SpaceX market debut that pulled risk appetite higher, and an apparent Middle-East de-escalation as a draft US–Iran sanctions deal circulated.

The clearest engine was AI hardware. Korea's KOSPI jumped 4.63% (its best week in some time, up 8.5%), Taiwan rose 2.36%, and Japan added 2.81%, while TSMC reported May revenue up 30% year-on-year on AI demand. Korea's memory and high-bandwidth-memory complex tends to lead the broader semiconductor cycle, and strength there has repeatedly flowed through to US chip names — visible Friday in the semiconductor ETF's 1.7% gain to near a 52-week high.

The week's headline event was SpaceX's public debut: priced at $135, it raised about $75B, was valued near $1.78T, closed day one up 19.2%, and leapfrogged Tesla in size. Two things stand out. First, the valuation is extreme — more than 90 times sales, and the company is loss-making. Second, the backdrop matters: for two decades the supply of US public shares has been shrinking through an IPO drought, heavy buybacks, and take-privates, so a mega-listing arriving into capital that has fewer places to go can command a rich multiple. Retail investors received an unusually large allocation of about 30%, while Musk kept roughly 85% of the voting power.

Volatility fell across the board — equity, Nasdaq, gold, and oil vol all lower — consistent with the risk-on mood. Long-term Treasury yields ticked up a couple of basis points, yet rate-sensitive real-estate names finished near 52-week highs and shrugged it off; the one place the higher long end bit was homebuilders, down about 0.8%. Gold itself was flat, but the miners jumped nearly 3% — their fixed operating costs amplify even small moves in the metal.

Finally, energy. Crude ended the week down about 7% as the draft US–Iran memorandum — temporarily lifting oil sanctions, releasing assets, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz — pointed to more supply and a thinner geopolitical risk premium. Offsetting headlines (strikes in Beirut, a tanker interdiction in the Channel) kept a floor under energy volatility, but the dominant signal was de-escalation.
