Observations
Today's setup: Markets are digesting a sharp escalation in the Middle East — US strikes on Iranian targets met with Iranian missile fire toward Jordan and Kuwait and a strike near a nuclear facility now under investigation. That sent volatility sharply higher into Friday's close (the VIX jumped 12% to 18.8, and crude-oil implied volatility spiked 7% to its highest level in months) even as the S&P 500 held onto most of its 2026 gains, still nearly 7% above its long-term trend. The real damage landed in Asia: South Korea's and Taiwan's benchmarks each fell more than 6% as a wave of retail margin calls unwound leveraged positions built up during the region's AI-hardware rally, dragging US semiconductor names lower in sympathy. Havens told a mixed story — Treasury yields fell across the curve on safe-haven buying, but the dollar and gold both stayed remarkably calm given the headlines, and crude oil itself actually eased slightly even as the options market priced in a much bigger insurance premium against a Strait of Hormuz disruption.
The Iran escalation followed the textbook geopolitical-shock playbook only partway. Treasury demand moved in the expected safe-haven direction, but two pieces didn't fit: the dollar barely budged, and crude oil slipped nearly 1% even as the options market's fear gauge for oil spiked to a multi-month high. The gap makes sense once you separate the physical oil market from the insurance market around it. Tanker owners and their insurers have historically pulled back from the Strait of Hormuz well before any shots are fired near it, pushing up the price of protection against a supply disruption even while the spot price of crude — which had already rallied hard over the prior week — gave back some of that earlier move. Energy-sector equities, oil-services and exploration names in particular, rallied on that same insurance-premium logic even as the crude contract itself was flat to lower.
The louder story by the numbers was in Asia. South Korea's central bank delivered its first interest-rate hike in three years, and reports over the past week put the number of leveraged retail accounts hitting margin-call thresholds above a million, with several hundred thousand facing forced liquidation. Because Korean investors carry meaningful exposure to US technology and chip names, that unwind spilled into American semiconductor stocks — the sector fell more than 2% and Taiwan Semiconductor's shares dropped nearly 3% even though the company's preliminary results actually beat expectations. It's also worth flagging that the semiconductor index has now touched an extreme overbought reading only three other times in market history, each of which was followed by a meaningful multi-month pullback; today's action is consistent with, though not proof of, that pattern reasserting itself.
Longer-dated Treasury yields fell more than shorter-dated ones, flattening the curve in the classic flight-to-quality pattern that shows up when investors expect a shock to weigh on growth rather than inflation. What's unusual is that the dollar didn't participate in the safe-haven bid that normally accompanies an equity selloff of this size — it closed essentially flat. One sector move stood out as hard to square with the day's obvious drivers, too: homebuilders fell nearly 3%, the worst showing of any sector, even though falling long-term rates would normally ease pressure on mortgage-sensitive names. That looks more like broad risk-off spillover than a rates story — housing names often get sold indiscriminately in a fast, headline-driven selloff regardless of the underlying setup.
