PSYC 2023 - Issue #12

Port Sydney Yacht Club 2023 - Issue #12: An eventful race!

Welcome to the penultimate issue of 2023.

Commodore's Corner

Edward Gledhill, Co-Commodore

Ahoy, members!

Despite a somewhat depleted fleet out on the water on Saturday, an excellent race took place as Orlando's race report attests to. We were extremely grateful to Paul Johnson (and regular RCO Mary Ann Hand) for stepping in as Committee Boat this week and to Larry Onisto for running the Crash Boat in lieu of the Lauries to whom we send our best wishes in the Orkney Islands!

Sue Tovee/Bill Lobb hosted the final lawn party of the summer in great style with amazing food. Those who weren't there also missed out on a group photo on the dock in front of Hilarity Hall (see below).

As announced on Saturday, Dean MacMurtry will take the reigns as next year's Commodore with the inimitable Mark Beadle as Vice. Thank you, in advance, for your service (and good luck!).

Before signing off for the season (the Gledhills leave today!), I'd like to thank all the volunteers who have fulfilled their roles with skill and dedication throughout this summer, and wish all sailors well in the last official race of the season.

Enjoy the end of the season and see you next summer,

--EG ⚓

⚠️ Trophy engraving: please bring your trophies to the year-end party on Saturday! Commodore Emeritus, Sue, has kindly volunteered to get them all engraved again this year.

This Week

⛵ Race #10 (the final of the season!) will take place on Saturday, 2nd September at 2:15pm. Be there or be square!
There may be additional racing in the form of a Fall race series. This will be left to sailors to co-ordinate ad hoc.

🎉 The year-end party and BBQ is this Saturday. Please e-transfer Elspeth for your tickets if you haven't already.
As a reminder about what you have signed up for, please see last week's newsletter. Thanks to all volunteers and especially Mark Beadle for organising the party.

Race #9 - 29.8.23

Orlando Gledhill, CAN8100

The penultimate race of the season saw seven boats braving the 10-15 knot Northerly in lovely sunny late August conditions and a long course set North of Crown (for the second time this year). After a light-wind season, for the second week in a row it was too windy for a sausage course to be sailed.

Bill Lobb and Mark Tovee suffered a capsize and gear failure before the start and called in at Pitman’s Bay to regroup before heading home. Delfina Ornesto and brother Davide also thought better of racing.

That left five boats racing and in practice three races within a race:

  1. Warren/Brad and Orlando/Sue match racing for the season overall winner’s trophy, a fine cup dating back to 1911. This has been on the Hall mantelpiece for most of the last 20 years. Warren and Brad were not going to give up the cup without a fight and the two boats were never more than a few lengths apart over 52 minutes. Warren/Brad led at the first mark after Orlando/Sue failed to cover at the top of the first beat. Orlando/Sue then overtook on the first reach and thereafter matched Warren/Brad tack for tack over the next 2 beats to win the race, and thus the trophy, by 12 seconds;

  2. Mark and Emma Beadle battling Edward Gledhill in his Laser for the handicap result. Several lead changes saw Mark and Emma eventually taking the win on the water and on handicap; and

  3. John Douglas, solo in the strong winds, competing for and (despite the odds) winning the Man Against Nature trophy.

Many thanks, as ever, to the Race Committee—this time Mary Ann Hand ably assisted by Paul Johnson and deputy mark layers Ros Phelps and Adam Gledhill who re-set the leeward mark in the challenging depth off Crown just before the start.

Sue Tovee and Bill Lobb were the joint hosts of the last regular season party, at Hilarity Hall, to which Warren and Brad sportingly brought the winner’s cup to be handed over.
