PSYC 2023 - Issue #10

Port Sydney Yacht Club 2023 - Issue #10: A Weather Miracle!

Commodore's Corner

Edward Gledhill, Co-commodore

Ahoy, members!

We are keeping it short and sweet this week, with only some essential year-end party (which is fast approaching!) info and race details. Thanks, once again, for tuning in.

Saturday morning saw almost all four seasons of weather in what was an anxious morning for the Commodores and Meteorologist, Ted. But, the age-old mantra "if you don't like the weather on Mary Lake, wait five minutes" (though, now, I think about it, I may have coined that truism) held true, as the Weather Gods gave us a miraculously sunny and (almost) windy afternoon. A steady nerve shown by the Meteorologist and Race Team, we went ahead, which proved to be the right decision, with an amazing race outcome... Thank you to all involved.

This week's race report can be found below. All that remains is to encourage you to purchase your tickets for the year-end party and sign up for a job - we need you!

See you on Saturday for Race #8.

P.S. Exploratory plans are underway to see if PSYC could host the 2024 Ontario Albacore Championships. We are excited to see if this works out - let us know your thoughts!

Race Report - Saturday, 12.6.2023

Orlando Gledhill, CAN8100

The 15 to 20 knots from the South West confidently forecast by Environment Canada proved to be a fitful and patchy 3 to 6 knots from the South East. Yet again, classic Mary Lake summer conditions. And yet again the mark setters (this time ably assisted by Ros Phelps) and the Race Committee successfully set a square beat and start line in challenging conditions and the race started after only a short delay, with 7 boats starting.

Ted and Stephanie Johnson started strongly and played the righthand side of the first beat, rounding the windward mark, laid just to the West of Rocky Island, first. They headed off somewhat high on the first reach towards Forrest Island, allowing Orlando and Sue to tuck in to leeward of them and lead by a length at the gybe mark, with the fleet closing fast as they brought a gust down with them.

Ted and Orlando remained within a boat length of each other at the leeward mark, with Dean and Warren/Brad not far behind. The Race Committee wisely signalled a shortened course, to end at the end of the second windward leg. That beat was all about trying to avoid the calm areas and position for the gusts of wind, which tended to come from the right. Ted/Stephanie managed this the best, correctly committing to the righthand side and were rewarded with a convincing win, their first of the season. The rest finished Orlando/Sue, Dean, Warren/Brad and Bill Lobb. Angus and Andrew Laurie were forced to retire with gear failure, Angus having seen fit to rip Daffoldil’s jibstay in half with his bare hands in an effort to apply rig tension. Edward G (in his Laser) also retired.
