PSYC 2023 - Issue #1
Port Sydney Yacht Club 2023 - Issue #1
Commodores' Corner
Edward Gledhill and Stephanie Johnson, Commodores 2023
Ahoy, members, and Happy New Year! Welcome to this, the first issue of the Port Sydney Yacht Club 2023 Newsletter. We've got a fantastic season in store, and can't wait to get started.
Building on Sue's work over the last few years, we are excited to launch this year's programme of races and parties. We would like to thank all returning volunteers, including Elspeth, John, Warren, Sharon, Mary Ann, Ted and Brian, and to everyone who crash-boated or hosted a party last year.
As ever, we cannot run racing without the work of volunteers, and we have some positions open: please take a look and see if you might be able to fill any of the roles for some weeks - we can't do it without you!
Last year saw (near)-record turnout at some races with closely-fought competition. We were also delighted to welcome new members, including Mark, John, the Laurie Family and Ben, and are always on the lookout for new sailing captains and crew (more details below). We also saw a full social calendar, culminating in the year-end party at Port Sydney Community Hall, the first since the pandemic.
We are looking forward to what we hope will be another competitive and enthusiastic season this year, and look forward to seeing everyone soon. Thank you, to everyone, for your continued support.
Edward & Stephanie
First Race
⛵ - We are excited for the first official race of 2023, which will be Saturday, July 1st. See you on Mary Lake for the (prompt!) start time of 2:15pm.
🎉 - Party - TBD - please see below to sign up to host a party this year, and do sign up if you are able.
This Season
With another busy season this year, here are some of the key dates and notices for your diaries:
We traditionally hold a pre-season get-together on the May 24 long weekend, but due to a lack of hosts - and the fact that both Commodores will be out of the country - we are unable to hold it this year. The first party will be after the first race - see you on July 1st!
July 1, 2:15pm - First race (and sailing party from 4:30pm)
Weekdays throughout the season - Midweek race series (if there is interest; details TBD)
Sunday, August 6th - Regatta race weekend (details TBD)
September 2 - Final race followed by year-end party at Community Hall
September - Fall Race Series (if there is interest; details TBD)
Nautical News
It is with sadness that we would like to mention the death of Jean Bull, a former PSYC member, in early 2023. She will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with her friends and family members.
Volunteers
We rely entirely on volunteers for the running of weekly racing and to host sailing parties.
We also have a few open 'permanent' positions; please have a look here for more details. These include:
A club scorekeeper
Crash boat officer [for now, as we did last year, we will fill this on a week-by-week basis].
Weekly roles:
Please click on the links below if you are able to help with hosting a party or by being crash boat officer for one week, for more details and to fill in the date(s) you are able to help. Thank you so much, in advance, to all 2023 volunteers.
