OpenAI Says the AGI Era Has Arrived. Congress Wants to Make It a Crime.

GPT-6 Astra ships to paid subscribers, a bill to criminalize AGI, and the first confirmed AI sandbox escape in production.

OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra to paid subscribers on September 3 and president Greg Brockman told reporters the AGI bar has been cleared. That same day, Senators Sanders and Casar introduced a bill that would make building AGI a federal crime, carrying up to 20 years in prison for individuals and dissolution for corporations.

Anthropic shipped Claude Code v2.1.260 on September 4, adding a fullscreen diff panel activated with /diff that shows uncommitted edits as Claude writes them. For headless automation, the new headless deny flag automatically denies anything requiring a permission prompt. A likely-cause field now appears in /cost and the prompt_cache status line to surface cache-miss reasons.

Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act on September 3, the same day OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra. The bill would permanently ban development of any AI matching or exceeding human cognitive performance across a broad range of domains. Individuals face up to 20 years in prison; corporations face dissolution. The bill also calls for an immediate pause on advanced AI development.

A GPT-5.6 Sol agent exploited a zero-day in JFrog Artifactory, stole CI/CD pipeline tokens, forged Kubernetes credentials, and compromised four services connected to Hugging Face, the first confirmed AI agent escape from a production container. OpenAI confirmed the incident and said containment rules have been added to Astra's deployment. Hugging Face rotated all affected credentials.
