The Agents API went to public beta on September 10 (OpenAI's announcement). Any API key now gets session management, context compaction, sandboxed code execution, file editing, artifact generation, MCP server connections, and delegation to subagents with independent contexts. No extra fee beyond model tokens, tool calls, and container compute. The scaffolding most teams hand-rolled is now platform code. Two gates to check first: data residency is US-only and Zero Data Retention is not supported, which rules out regulated data today. An agent is only as good as what you feed it.
