Big Tech's off-balance-sheet AI debt hit $1.65 trillion

A Nikkei study found Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle carry $1.65 trillion in off-balance-sheet AI debt from data-center leases and GPU supply deals, up 8x since 2022 and now larger than the $1.35 trillion on their balance sheets. EU AI Act transparency rules take effect August 2

The Commission published its Article 50 guidelines July 20: from August 2, providers must tell users when they are interacting with an AI and add machine-readable marks to AI-generated audio, image, video, and text.

Pillar Security disclosed "trusted-tool escapes" in Cursor, OpenAI Codex CLI, Google Gemini CLI, and Antigravity: agents write files in their trusted workspace that external tools later execute outside the sandbox. Cursor's is CVE-2026-48124, fixed in v3.0.0; Codex CLI patched the allowlist bypass in v0.95.0.
