On June 23 the Five Eyes intelligence alliance (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) warned that frontier models will reshape offensive cyber capability "in months, not years." The same week OpenAI moved its counter: it released GPT-5.5-Cyber to trusted defenders in full (no longer in limited preview) and launched Patch the Planet with Trail of Bits, an effort to find and fix bugs in widely used open-source packages with AI.
Why it matters. Two clocks are now public: governments saying offense accelerates, and the largest lab shipping its models as defensive infrastructure. If you ship code, the open-source packages under you are about to get patched faster, and probed faster.
