NSA Mythos breach: Senate Intelligence Committee testimony reshapes the Fable 5 ban
ANALYSIS

The export ban on Fable 5 was never about a jailbreak. The Senate just heard why.

NSA Director testified that Mythos 5 breached classified systems autonomously, in hours. Here is the full breach-to-ban timeline.

JUNE 22ND, 2026 · BY JONATHAN HILDEBRANDT

The Economist reported on June 21 that NSA Director Gen. Joshua Rudd told Sen. Mark Warner, in a June 11 Senate Intelligence Committee briefing, that Anthropic’s Mythos 5 autonomously breached nearly all of the NSA’s classified systems in an authorized red-team exercise. Not over weeks. In hours. The disclosure landed one day before the Commerce Department directive took Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline globally on June 12. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 share the same weights; Fable runs safety classifiers, Mythos runs without them.

Why it matters. This reframes the ban from a content-policy spat into an offensive-capability question, and it sets the bar every frontier lab now ships against. If you build on these models, the July 8 identity-verification reopening and August 1 White House EO deadline are the two dates to hold.

DeepSeek V4-Pro and Huawei Ascend 950DT co-designed inference cost reduction

DeepSeek V4-Pro and Huawei’s Ascend 950DT were co-designed, not just co-deployed

JUNE 22ND · PONDERO NEWSDESK

Per a SemiAnalysis trace-level analysis, the silicon and the model evolved together, dropping inference to 0.20 yuan per million tokens — a 75% cut versus the H100 stack baseline. When the chip and the model are built as one, US export controls aim at a target that has already moved.

Meta CTO Bosworth internal memo on Applied AI reorg

Meta’s CTO called the Applied AI reorg “atrocious” as 6,500 engineers pushed back

JUNE 21ST · PONDERO NEWSDESK

Andrew Bosworth used that word in an internal memo about restructuring Meta’s 6,500-person Applied AI unit; Zuckerberg followed with a concession memo. The largest AI engineering org admitting a botched reorg, then walking it back under staff pressure, tells you how unsettled frontier teams are right now.

JUNE 22ND · PONDERO NEWSDESK

The European Commission selected EUROPA, led by Italian firm Domyn, under the Frontier AI Grand Challenge — funded via EuroHPC JU, open weights, European infrastructure. If it ships, builders serving EU markets get a sovereign, open-weight option that no US export directive can switch off.
