Noam Shazeer, co-author of the 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need" and a co-lead on Gemini, announced his departure from Google on June 18 to join OpenAI for next-generation architecture work. He had been at Google since 2000, leaving only for a three-year run founding Character AI, which Google bought back into in a 2024 deal worth $2.7 billion. Same week, former Trump White House AI policy official Dean Ball said he joins OpenAI July 6 to run a new Strategic Futures team under Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon. Architecture choices set the ceiling for every model generation downstream. Google paid $2.7 billion to lock in the inventor of the Transformer and lost him in under two years.

Cursor v3.8 turns automations into a plain-language skill.
JUNE 19TH · PONDERO NEWSDESK
The new /automate skill takes a goal in plain English and wires up the triggers, instructions, and tools itself; v3.8 also adds five GitHub trigger types (issue comments, inline PR-review comments, review submissions, thread-status changes, workflow-run completions). If you live in PR review, the "auto-fix PR review comments" Marketplace template is the one to steal first. Cursor changelog.
