Ideal Monday #3 - Atomic Habits

Hello and Good Morning!

A core feature of IdealDay is tracking of daily habits. Habits are defined once, and pre-filled on each planned day (though you can always change your habits list at any time in user settings).

Habits in IdealDay are flexible - you can set whatever you want. They can be big or small.

Today, I wanted to talk a little bit about “atomic habits” - a term popularized by James Clear in his excellent 2018 book of the same name.

The idea: an atomic habit is small (like an atom), and serves as the building block of something much bigger. For example, if you want to start exercising, you could start by simply doing 5 push ups every day.

Some guidelines for building atomic habits:

  1. Make it obvious: design your environment around an unavoidable cue (e.g. lay your running shoes out the night before)

  2. Make it attractive: pair the habit with something you already enjoy (go for a run and then enjoy a smoothie)

  3. Make it easy: shrink the habit, making it as small as possible. “Read before bed” can become “read one page of a book”.

  4. Make it satisfying: give yourself an immediate reward, as the brain prioritizes instant feedback

IdealDay is a great way to build and track atomic habits.

And by the way - we’ve just turned on monthly and annual subscription options!
