History Repeating? This Ain't Your Grandpa's "Animal Farm" Nor Your Ma's Chicken Kiev
Do you know who that is? Do you know where that is? Do you know when that is?
Context clues from my headline provide hints as to the where of it all, but the who and the when are even more revealing tonight as I type this.
That’s Vitaliy Klychko (Vitali Klitschko), the former world heavyweight boxing champion, standing in the center of the photo. He’s in the Maidan (Independence Square), in the middle of Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv. But it’s not from February 2022. And this photo doesn’t show the boxing champ fighting off the Russians. Oh, no. This photo is from February 2014, when Klitschko was neither boxer nor mayor. Did you know the boxing champ is now the mayor of Kyiv? Or at least he still served in that capacity as I typed this, because the Russian invasion continues marching toward Kyiv with the intention of overthrowing the Ukrainian government and installing pro-Kremlin puppets, so as the facts on the ground change from day to day, hour to hour, as the Russians take out the Ukrainian TV towers with missiles and launch misinformation campaigns online and over their own airwaves, those of us thousands of miles away are left in the dark, waiting to hear the latest updates. But none of this is new to Ukrainians.
