It. Doesn't. Matter.
Please allow me a short rant…
A couple of emails ago, I wrote about how much fun I was starting to have with social media again, especially Threads.
It was nice seeing a community of photographers and people interested in photography meeting and discussing things.
That was until the most recent influx of new users.
Now, it seems like non-stop engagement bait.
“Normalize” this and “Hot Take” that…
“Unpopular opinion” on top of “Unpopular opinion”
Even general questions you think someone’s asking in good faith are just for them to get engagement, views, and comments. (I got burnt by a couple of these recently)
Or questions that seemingly would be much easier to google to get an answer to?
I mean, when you come down to it…
It.
All.
Doesn’t.
Matter.
None of it matters: film, digital, mirrorless, Leicas, phone photography, inkjet prints, working in the darkroom, digitally scanning your film, etc, etc, etc.
The “how” doesn’t matter; it’s the “what” and the “why.”
What are you doing with all that gear and that knowledge?
Why are you photographing what you’re photographing?
Why am I photographing what I’m photographing?
We all have a small window of time on this Earth to photograph, and many of us seem intent on wasting time on things that don’t matter in the long run.
The photographs we leave behind matter.
The memories.
The stories.
I won’t end this with a cliche like, “Go make more memories; tell some stories.”
You all know that.
I have to stop spending so much time on social media.
Until next time,
Laidric
