What is this again?
Remember how this works? Me neither! In the eternity since our last season ended, the mailing list has doubled(!), so it seems like a little background refresher on the PPC ways is in order:
(Also, big 👋 to all the new folks on the list, and apologies if you signed up a year ago expecting timely updates 🫠)
The Philadelphia Pinball Club is a city-wide crew that meets every week on a seasonal basis to hang out and play pinball together. Our meetups are organized around friendly competition in a league format, but the real goal is to introduce a bunch of rad people to each other, and then to kick it with all your new pals on Monday nights.
Absolutely no experience is necessary — the club is set up specifically with beginners and new players in mind first. Good vibes are the chief requirement.
This is a DIY affair — everything runs on a volunteer level, any money we collect goes towards prizes and expenses, and the community contributes all the raddest stuff.
Most importantly, the club is only cool because the members are cool to each other. We welcome people of all types provided they share our common values of mutual respect, kindness, and encouragement. All PPC members abide by a Code of Conduct that can be found here.
How this whole thing works
In two weeks, on July 18th, we're going to meet up at Barcade at 7:30pm for a casual pre-season flip sesh to celebrate the return of the macks.
Every Monday night after that, for 8 weeks, we will meet at Barcade at 7:30pm. Each week everyone who shows up will get randomly divided into groups of 4, and you'll play 4 games with your group for the night. We'll tally the group's wins/losses at the end of the night, and use the scores to generate rankings for a big final tournament.
Everyone plays for free on their first night with us. There are no commitments required, but if you want to keep coming back, club dues are $20 for the season.
Finals will be held on September 19th. If we have enough people, we'll sort players into an A division and a B division based on standings, each with their own brackets and prizes. If you've played at least one week during the season and have paid dues, you're eligible to play in the finals.
During Finals, we take all the dues (minus whatever it cost to run the club for the season), and turn them into cash payouts for winners and sick boardwalk-style prizes you can earn throughout the night.
Each season's A division winner is immortalized on the side of the PPC cup, which is theirs to display proudly until next season's finals.
This Newsletter
Every week before our meetups I'll send out a reminder and some news and updates via this newsletter. Maybe one day I'll get my act together on social media, but until then this is the spot for all the latest, so don't sleep!
As we get closer to the 18th and I have more details to share, or answers for questions, I'll keep you all posted here.
The Covid Disclaimer
Obviously Covid sucks ass, and everyone has varying levels of comfort with hanging out in a packed bar together. Barcade doesn't have any Covid-related requirements for entry, so we don't either, but I want to encourage folks to feel completely free to come masked up and to participate in whatever manner they need in order to feel safe.
There's a level of risk to indoor gatherings of any kind these days, and while I don't intend to apply any rules to our meetups that the city doesn't require, I'd like to ask everyone to look out for each other in the following ways:
If you're feeling sick, please be cool and skip the meetups until you know what's up. I know it's a public place that is largely out of our control, but do your friends a solid and try not to pass anything on.
Respect the decisions folks make for themselves about masks and try to be sensitive to personal space. It's still a weird time and we're all having to figure out how to navigate it for ourselves. If you're cool with business as usual, that's all good, just extend that courtesy to others too.
I'm gonna work on spreading out the responsibility a bit this season so that we've got some backup in case we need it, so if you're down to help with stuff like: being a rules judge, running a meetup, or welcoming new folks each week, hit me up!
ALRIGHT ALREADY LETS GOOO
