🏆 FINALS are TONIGHT! 🏆
TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT BABY. Season finals are going down at 7:30pm @ Barcade in Fishtown.
If you read nothing else in this email, please read this part:
LAST CALL FOR SIGNUPS TONIGHT IS AT 8PM, SO DON'T BE LATE OR WE WON'T BE ABLE TO FIT YOU IN.
Also:
If you're planning on bringing stuff for the prize table, the earlier you can show up the better.
It takes some time to arrange the tables, and we wanna make sure everyone's stuff is highlighted properly, so the more time we have to configure everything the smoother it all runs.
OK! Here's how it's gonna go down tonight:
FORMAT
Because we're trying something new this season, our format is going to depend on how many folks show up. I'm not sure of the exact numbers yet (this is Schu's department — massive thanks to him for organizing the tourney every season), but we will need somewhere around 25 people to make it work.
Right now the plan is to split the field into two divisions, A and B. The top 16 players in the standings are automatically qualified for A, and the rest will make up B. If any of the top 16 don't show tonight, the next highest player available will move into their spot, so if you're on the bubble in B right now and a couple people don't show, you'll get moved up to A.
If the numbers tonight are lower than we're expecting that's ok too — it just means that based on how many players are in B, we'll either need to modify the B format to accommodate, OR if the B field ends up being too small we'll do away with the divisions entirely.
If the numbers are on our side...
Both divisions will play a new round robin format, where you will play in a format that is almost identical to our weekly format (4 rounds, with groups of 2-4), but your group will change each round, and the games will be pre-assigned.
We'll record points in the same way we do weekly, and after 4 rounds, the players with the highest point totals will advance to a one-round final to determine the winners.
The goal is to solve a handful of classic PPC finals problems of yesteryear:
making sure everyone gets a good amount of rounds in
having everyone play against as many unique opponents as possible (ideally, you'll play everyone in your division at least once)
ensuring people can stick around and watch the final matches if they like
wrapping this whole thing up at a reasonable hour
If the numbers are not on our side...
We'll retain the same format, but may need to have the computer generate pairings for each group in a balanced fashion. The downside of this is that you might not face off against everyone in your division at least once (and may end up playing the same people several times).
Everything else about the format will stay the same though.
If the numbers are reallllly not on our side...
We'll likely axe the divisions entirely and play one big tournament for all the marbles, in the aforementioned format. If this happens, we'll pay out the top 8 instead of the top 4, but only one of youse is takin a sweet trophy home.
PRIZES
You already know the winners of each division are walking away with some choice hardware, but the top 4 in both A and B will also get paiddddd (in cold hard cash and/or bounties from the bird).
BUT, in addition to this — there will be some heavy action at the Community Prize Table tonight.
In column A, you'll have your Door Prizes. If any of your scores end in 00 tonight, you've just landed a door prize of your choice.
In column B, you've got your Primos. These are the big boys, and you'll need to complete a specific task on a game to get one. We'll have a sheet posted with all the challenges, and if you can make it happen, you're walking out with the top-shelf stuff my friend.
NEXT SEASON'S DATES
We're gonna take a short break to recharge after tonight, but are targeting mid-October for a fall reboot. I should have specifics very soon, and will send out an announcement and post em on the site once we've got everything nailed down.
In the meantime, we've got a few fun things cooking between now and then, so keep your eyeballs peeled for some more announcements.
OH MY GOD WE MADE IT. I can't believe it. I will see you all TONIGHT for the FINAL COUNTDOWN.
💛💛
