2023 PPC Winter Season starts 1/23!
Friends!
I've just received an official notice from the PPC communications division, marked for immediate release, and addressed to the membership at large. It reads as follows:
"We're back, baby."
The PPC rides again! Our 2023 Winter Season kicks off Monday, January 23, same time (7:30pm), same place (Barcade in Fishtown), same vibe: simply having a wonderful Monday night.
New here? First time? Hell yeah. Here's how it all works:
We're a crew that meets up every Monday on a seasonal basis to hang out and flip together at Barcade.
The meetups are organized according to a league format — so ya, technically you will be someone who has "joined a pinball league" (pretty sick, IMO) — but friendly competition is a mere side effect! The real goal is just to introduce a bunch of rad people to each other and have a time with yer pals on a Monday night.
Zero experience with either pinball or competition is not only unnecessary, it's what we base the whole deal around. The club is set up specifically with beginners and new players in mind first — (as ever) good vibes are the chief requirement.
This is a DIY affair — everything runs on a volunteer level, any money we collect goes towards prizes and expenses, and the community contributes all the raddest stuff.
Most importantly, the club is only cool because the members are cool to each other. We welcome people of all types provided they share our common values of mutual respect, kindness, and encouragement. All PPC members abide by a Code of Conduct that can be found here.
The nitty gritty
In a little less than two weeks, on January 23th, we're going to meet up at Barcade at 7:30pm to kick off week 1 of an 8-week season.
If you want to join, all you gotta do is show up! You'll find us at one of the tables towards the back with a little red bird and a sign up sheet.
Each week, everyone who shows up will get randomly divided into a group of 3 or 4 people, and you'll play 4 games with your group for the night. We don't track scores — instead we keep track of how you played against your group on each game (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc). We'll tally all that at the end of the night, and the scores get used to generate rankings for a big final tournament.
Everyone plays for free on their first night with us. There are no commitments required, but we do have two rules:
if you want to keep coming back after your first night, club dues are $20 for the season.
if you want to play in the finals, you need to have played at least one night of the season with us, and be paid up.
Finals will be held on March 20th. It's the best. We take all the dues (minus whatever it cost to run the club for the season), and turn them into cash payouts for winners and sick boardwalk-style prizes for everyone throughout the night.
If we have enough people, we'll sort players into an A division and a B division based on standings, each with their own brackets and prizes.
Each season's A division winner is immortalized on the side of the PPC cup and tasked with the sacred duty of displaying it in proud view of their friends and family until next season.
This Newsletter
The thing about social media is that it's the worst, and so I had this idea that I was just gonna send out a newsletter every week during the season instead of posting on a million different channels, simple as. The thing is that it kind of works, but also sometimes it gets buried in Gmail tabs or spam folders at the whim of the email gods, so apologies if you're among the unlucky few that got got.
Nevertheless, every week before our meetups I'll send out a reminder and some news and updates via this newsletter. I'll make regular updates on the PPC IG too — but this is the place to be for all the official communique.
The next email will land on the 23rd (week 1!), so keep an eye out!
