Pharma & Biotech Jobs Weekly Roundup - May 26, 2025

Last week we saw 2,309 job ads posted in the US among the 59 companies we track and added another to the roster. Inductive Bio is a company building an AI and software platform for accelerating small molecule drug discovery. Inductive hasn't been particularly active with job postings, but we're tracking it along with other "techbio" focused companies to keep an eye on that active corner of the market.

Last Week's Key Findings

Takeda, HHMI, and Johnson & Johnson showed big job posting jumps last week, while Biogen and Legend Biotech pulled back significantly.

Top changes in job posting frequency last week. Takeda, HHMI, and Johnson and Johnson led in new jobs posted.

Takeda Hiring and New Research Positions with HHMI Investigators

Takeda seems to be split between commercial sales roles and medical (primarily nursing based) positions. The medical positions are almost exclusively with BioLife Plasma services, the plasma donation centers Takeda acquired with Shire/Baxalta in 2019.

HHMI lists positions from their sponsored investigators and positions at their headquarters. Last week we saw quite a few postdoc and lab support roles around the country. HHMI is an independent funding body but investigators still depend on local state and federal funding sources to run their labs. It is encouraging to see new academic research positions coming online despite the turmoil at NIH.

Seniority and Management Focus

Overall, there was a slight bias towards individual contributor positions last week (42% management vs 59% individual contributors) and a strong bias to senior level talent (89% of roles were classified as senior).

Legend Biotech stood out with 75% of their new roles being management level in commercial and medical.

Upcoming AI/ML Hiring Report

I just finished a research report on AI/ML hiring trends in biotech for Q1 2025. The brief covers:

  • Top hiring companies (Abbott led with 60 roles - double the next company)
  • Geographic distribution (62% of jobs in CA/MA, only 11% remote)
  • Experience level demand (80% Senior/Associate, minimal entry-level)
  • Role types and compensation (AI/ML Engineers: $189K median)

This is based on 381 job postings I tracked across 37 biotech companies. I'm planning to sell the report for $79 starting next week to recruiters and industry analysts.
