Quietly judging you

“Create, and be true to yourself, and depend only on your own good taste.” —Duke Ellington
It’s not enough to follow your heart.
Not enough to do things that pay well, not enough to make things happen or to build things or change things because somebody asked you to.
It’s even not enough to do things that get noticed by others.
The best of what you do, the finest hours of your craft, comes from knowing what you give a damn about. even when the material rewards aren’t there.
Because what will always be there is your sense of taste. quietly judging you making you better at what you do.
Discipline, clarity, objectivity: these are what define that sense of taste
It’s your job to nurture these throughout your life.
Understand: if you are serious about the business of being creative, the thing you make, the thing you do the thing you change the people you reach…
These are mere outcomes.
You practically give that part away for free (http://thinkitcreative.com/blog/what-you-give-away-like-the-elvis-of-punk/) .
Knowing how to achieve those outcomes consistently, reliably and true to your sense of taste:
That’s what you really deserve to be compensated for.
Very best, Patrick
