Voting Rights Teach-in Tonight!
Well, technically we’re making Good Trouble in Wells Branch this time.
Hello, friends and neighbors! I’m Jennifer, with Pflugerville Action, the organizers of NO KINGS Pflugerville last month. You are receiving this email because you RSVP’d to, and probably participated in, the NO KINGS Pflugerville protest on June 14th. If you don’t want to hear from us again, scroll all the way to the bottom and unsubscribe. Come back any time.
We’re doing a voting rights teach-in!
If you’re still here, I’d like to invite you to our event tonight for Good Trouble Day, and celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader John Lewis.
Please join us this evening, July 17th, for a Voting Rights In Texas Teach-In, 7pm to 9pm, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Wells Branch. Speakers include Dana DeBeauvoir, former Travis County Clerk, and civil rights lawyer Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas NAACP.
Please RSVP, as seating is limited. If able, please bring a canned good for the church food pantry.
RSVP on Mobilize:

Who’s speaking tonight?
Speakers include civil rights lawyer Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas NAACP, and former Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir will tell horror stories of the 2020 election. You’ll get a crash course on how you can fight bad bills in the Texas Legislature, from Rox Sayde with Equality Texas. Neither Rep. Vikki Goodwin nor Senator Sarah Eckhardt have told me what they’re talking about, but it’s going to be good. I’m sure. It’ll be fine.
___________
Why are we doing this on a random Thursday night?
July 17th is the anniversary of the death of civil rights leader John Lewis. Today, across the nation, there will be protests and rallies around voting rights in his honor (There’s even one in downtown Austin). We celebrate his legacy tonight by taking a hard look at Texas voter suppression, past, present, and what Governor Abbott hopes to get away with at the special session next week.
We apologize for the short notice. I don’t know about you, but I have to take breaks from the news or I get nothing done.
___________
This is free, right?
A Voting Rights In Texas Teach-In is a free, nonpartisan, public civic education event. The teach-in is also a canned food drive and fundraiser for the St. Andrews food pantry. If you are able to, please bring a nonperishable food item to the teach-in tonight. You can also make a monetary donation at the link below. Be sure to choose the Food Pantry fund in the drop down menu.

Do you know that you made history last month?
I want to thank you. If you haven't heard, there were 1,500 people standing along Kelly Lane on June 14th, having a great time on a beautiful day for democracy. Really. We had people assigned to count. You helped create the largest mass protest in United States history, around 5.2 million people. You are a part of the story that history books will tell someday. Next time you’re having a bad day, remember that.
Thank you for proving that democracy is still alive and worth saving. Let’s do it again. Hang out with us tonight and learn about fighting voter suppression. And bring your kids, if they’re old enough to sit through people speaking at a podium. Young people need to hear about what a long, ugly fight it has always been for the right to vote.
Are you ready to DO SOMETHING?
The special session starts next week, and there is some very bad stuff on the agenda, a little nightmare fuel for everyone. We’ll talk about that tonight. I guarantee that there’s something in the agenda that will affect what you care about, and once you learn about it, you’ll want to stop that bill. Come to the teach-in tonight, and we’ll show you what you can do.
Do you really have plans for a Thursday night? You could learn some stuff, instead. Bring a friend.
Because we’re at an indoor venue, seats are limited, so please RSVP on Mobilize, and bring nonperishable food items if able.

If you’re still reading, let’s hang out. Tonight. At a church. With some elected officials.
Thanks for making it to the end. I hope to see you tonight.
