[Petit Fours #458] On social support networks, trans technologies, and strangers on a bench

Hi from snowy Stockholm! Here’s what I’ve got for you today:

#1 Liam Bannon in Memoriam is a short piece by Kjeld Schmidt. It is worth reading to remember someone who was core to our community and to learn some more of the history of CSCW research. ”‘By focusing exclusively on the human-computer dyad we miss out on the importance of social support networks in both the accomplishment of many work activities and the development of a sense of community that facilitates these work activities. [...] The argument here goes beyond a simple call to take into account the “social context” of computer system use. Rather, [...] we should provide many hooks where human help can be solicited either in the immediate work environment or through the computer, and this should be an integral part of the total support package that we design.’ (Bannon 1985, pp. 18 f.)”

#2 I was delighted to hear that Oliver L. Haimson, currently a Digital Futures Scholar in Residence here in Stockholm, received the 2025 Labor Tech Research Network Book Award for his recent book Trans Technologies! The book is available open-access from the MIT Press and Oliver will also be giving a seminar related to it in Stockholm (and over Zoom) on Thursday February 19.

#3 This summer doctoral program, a collaboration between the Oxford Internet Institute and UC Berkeley’s School of Information, sounds wonderful. Oh, to be young and a PhD student again! (Well, not really.)

#4 My current favorite podcast, to keep me company while walking, is Strangers on a Bench.
