[Petit Fours #454] On quantum, tech abuse, and doing things together

Hello from the first day of December! Boosted by the little glimmer of sunshine on the sky, here’s what I’ve got for you today:

#1 I am energized after this weekend’s encounters with Helsinki-based friends, academic and otherwise, and by being reminded of the strength in doing things together. Whether you’ve known Demos Helsinki for a long time or have never heard of it, this short text on the 20-year-old, written by one of the founders, Aleksi Neuvonen, is a nice read: Building Demos Helsinki

#2 I spent last Tuesday at an event about a big Swedish research investment that is under way: Excellence Clusters for Groundbreaking Technologies. Among many interesting things, I heard much more about quantum than I’m used to, and that made me wonder whether this is something one should be looking into. This short blogpost by Minna Ruckenstein seems to indicate a positive response: Brokering goes quantum

#3 The Tech Abuse Handbook looks like a great resource, for both practical and pedagogical uses: “Technology, while convenient, is increasingly exploited by perpetrators to cause harm in relationships. Some tech abuse is obvious, but other forms are subtle, hidden in app settings and invisible connections. This handbook, co-developed by the Surrey Domestic Abuse Partnership (SDAP) and Royal Holloway University of London, helps you take back control. It doesn’t try to cover everything but focuses on simple steps that can make a real difference. If any part of this feels unfamiliar, reach out to a trusted, tech-savvy friend or support worker for help. You don’t need to do everything at once, and you don’t need to do it alone.”

#4 With only a few weeks left until the holidays, I once again welcome your recommendations for what to read! I love receiving ideas, even if the piles I’ve already hauled home from the library might indicate that I don’t exactly need more right now.
