[Petit Fours #442] On ethical tensions, revisions, and literary canons

Hi, all! Here’s what I’ve got for you today:

#1 Happy things happening at our department: On October 9, 2025, Clàudia Figueras Julián will present her PhD thesis, Ethical Tensions in AI-Based Systems: “This thesis contributes to human-computer interaction (HCI) by exploring how various stakeholders in Swedish public organisations make sense of ethical considerations and negotiate ethical responsibility in the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems.” Check out the details on this page where a link to the thesis will appear soon, too.

#2 With the CHI 2026 paper deadline only a few days away, wisdom from The McPhee Method resonates: “So much of writing is managing your own emotions“ and, then, “revision, revision again, then refinement — a sculptor with ax, then knife, then scalpel”.

#3 The preliminary program for the CSCW 2025 conference is now online: “Our in-person program includes 397 papers across 70 paper sessions, as well as 10 panels and SIGs, our Lasting Impact Award session, the Town Hall, and our opening/closing plenaries. Our hybrid chairs are finalizing the program for the online pre-conference and will post that online soon. This event will be held a week before the in-person conference and is open to both in-person and virtual registrants.” I’m scheduled to present our paper on digital contraception on Wednesday October 22 in the 11am session Beyond AI: Additional Considerations for Enhancing Healthcare.

#4 There’s been much talk about literary canons in Sweden lately. This episode of Bildningspodden offers a delightfully undramatic reflection on the topic (in Swedish).
