[Petit Fours #438] On deadlines, polyester, and life
Hi, all! Reporting from the first day back at the office, it feels nice to settle back into everyday routines after almost six weeks on the road. Here’s what I’ve got for you:
#1 I read this short piece before the summer and have kept thinking about the metaphor ever since: GenAI is Our Polyester
#2 Here’s a new textbook for introductory-level courses on Human–Computer Interaction: Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction by Kasper Hornbæk, Per Ola Kristensson, and Antti Oulasvirta. The best part: It’s available Open Access!
#3 As the autumn deadline season is about to kick off, I am reminded of this beautiful poster about types of deadlines: “The Timelines, deadlines and lifelines workshop uses a set of bespoke illustrations that act as prompts for people to explore how deadlines operate in different situations and to see challenges we are facing differently. Inspired by people’s responses to the illustrations, and to the questions they help raise about people’s experiences of deadlines, we have made Types of deadlines, a poster displaying 15 different illustrations.”
#4 Most of my summer reading ended up being Finnish fiction and memoirs. The one thing that truly left a mark, though, I got nowhere near finishing! Judging from the first fifty pages, Georges Perec’s classic Life: A User's Manual is a classic for a reason!
