[Petit Fours #436] On stereotypes, chatbots, and emotion work
Hi, all! Without further ado, here’s what I’ve got for you today:
#1 Every now and then I get recommendations from readers. Here’s one I want to share forward: The Original Chatbot: On Joseph Weizenbaum and Eliza by Nicholas Carr.
#2 For more – and wilder – about chatbots, check out Diabolus Ex Machina by Amanda Guinzburg. “Presented to you in the form of unedited screenshots, the following is a ‘conversation’ I had with Chat GPT upon asking whether it could help me choose several of my own essays to link in a query letter I intended to send to an agent. What ultimately transpired is the closest thing to a personal episode of Black Mirror I hope to experience in this lifetime.“
#3 Contributing to STEM & Stereotypes – an art project by Anabella Aguileira that explore stereotypes about how people in STEM “should” look or dress – was a no-brainer after seeing the work featured at our exhibition. Maybe you’d like to share something, too? “Each piece combines visuals with quotes or reflections from women and non-binary people in STEM. — I’m collecting short, anonymous quotes or reflections about experiences with appearance-related stereotypes in STEM.”
#4 Emotion work and researcher care come up a lot in discussions with my colleagues. It’s good to see similar discussions unfolding in Finland: Vaikeat aiheet ja emotionaalinen sitoutuminen tutkimustyössä
