[Petit Fours #435] On regulation, risky research, and showing up

Hi, all! As our focus period is coming to a close, there is plenty of other matters to tackle before logging out for the summer. So, without further ado, here’s what I’ve got for you today:

#1 AoIR’s Risky Research Guide offers guidance on researcher protection and safety: “We designed this report to directly address the increasing personal, institutional, and political risks faced by researchers around the globe. This includes researchers from marginalized and minoritized communities and people working on controversial, sensitive, or politically charged topics—from disinformation and extremism to LGBTQ+ rights, platform governance, and climate change.”

#2 Janet Salmons does valuable work in compiling materials to guide and support research practice, too. For an example, check out Online Interviews: Resources for Researchers.

#3 In a somewhat humorous moment, Google Scholar recommended Yarn as a Means to Give Form to Entanglements of Regulation, Design and Sustainability Practices for me, evidently missing the data that the authors are close colleagues of mine. I whole-heartedly concur with the recommendation! The lead author, Anton Poikolainen Rosén, will present this thoughtful pictorial at the DIS conference in July.

#4 This seven-minute talk by Tommi Laitio, on the topic of Why I Show Up? is well worth a watch. What do you show up for, and what keeps you doing so?
