[Petit Fours #424] On public space, sauna, and rumors

Hi, all! Another Monday, another Petit Fours. Here’s what I’ve got for you today:

#1 For everyone thinking about public space – and the role robots might play in them – check out Making Sense of Public Space for Robot Design, by Hannah Pelikan, Bilge Mutlu, and Stuart Reeves.

#2 This lecture by Kate Starbird is a lot to take in (but also where else will you learn this much about media, social media, and politics in just one hour): A Spotlight on Rumors “Rumors are an inherent human reaction to crisis events like natural disasters or political upheaval because they help us make sense of what’s happening. Join UW Professor Kate Starbird at the 2025 University Faculty Lecture for a discussion about her work understanding how online rumors, misinformation and disinformation are created and shared in uncertain times — shining a light on the roles we and others play on social media and beyond.“

#3 In writing a workshop proposal on data and data work in crisis for Aarhus, I was reminded of this amazing 2015 talk by Maciej Cegłowski: Haunted By Data. Back then, all the talk was about Big Data (and not AI) but there’s much here that’s worth revisiting now.

#4 With readers outside of the Nordics in mind, I would be amiss not to point you to KAJ’s amazingly catchy song Bara Bada Bastu, Sweden’s entry to Eurovision 2025. Nåjaa!
