[Petit Fours #399] On algorithmic management in minor key, job automation, and the Nordic Gender Fund
Hi, folks! As the season is changing and the semester is starting, here’s what I’ve got for you:
#1 In reading about algorithmic management, I’m always on the lookout for empirical cases from the Nordics. Here’s one by Konstantinos Floros: Rethinking algorithmic management in minor key: The case of housecleaning platform labour in Denmark.
#2 From Wired, AI Is Already Taking Jobs in the Video Game Industry is well worth reading: “Job automation rarely happens evenly or cleanly. Historically, much of its impact is felt through deskilling, as more tasks are handed over to a machine or program, or attrition, as employees who are laid off, quit, or retire, don’t get replaced or hired back. Generative AI, by all indications, is no different.”
#3 Funding alert: The newly established Nordic Gender Fund will open its first call for applications on 15 October 2024. Deadline for applications is 15 November.
#4 For those based in/near Helsinki, here’s a lovely academic event later this month: Hidas akatemia – keidas vai kangastus?
