[Petit Fours #398] On synthetic data, food delivery, and worker data collectives
Hi, everyone! Without further ado, here’s what I’ve got for you this week:
#1 Synthetic data is mind-boggling stuff: ‘Intersectional hallucinations’: why AI struggles to understand that a six-year-old can’t be a doctor or claim a pension
#2 There’s still time to submit to our CSCW workshop on The Work of AI. The final deadline is September 20.
#3 This cool CSCW workshop on Worker Data Collectives will be happening in parallel with ours but in a hybrid form: “In this workshop, we will facilitate design activities and discussion about how to support platform-based laborers in the face of algorithmic management, information asymmetries, and insufficient policies and regulations. We will explore how data collectives might be designed to address platform work issues (e.g., wage theft, discrimination, and platform accountability), as well as their limitations.”
#4 On Friday September 6, we will be gathering for Riyaj Shaikh’s pre-doc seminar on the work practice of platform-mediated food delivery, with Claus Bossen from Aarhus as the opponent. Let me know if you’d like to take part!
