[Petit Fours #394] On slop, care platforms, and designing movement
Hi, everyone, and happy midsummer week! Here’s what I’d like to share with you:
#1 Likely a little late to the game, I’ve learned a new word – slop – that I sadly think will turn out very useful. Here’s a short quote from the NY Times to explain: “Slop, at least in the fast-moving world of online message boards, is a broad term that has developed some traction in reference to shoddy or unwanted AI content in social media, art, books and, increasingly, in search results. -- “‘Ignore that email; it’s spam’, and ‘Ignore that article; it’s slop’, are both useful lessons.””
#2 For those who’d like to know what my colleagues are up to, here’s a talk Barry Brown recently gave at UCL: On Movement: Designing Movement in Interaction
#3 Some of you might want to tune in for this study launch event, organized by the FES Competence Centre on the Future of Work and EPSU, on June 24: Care Platforms - impacts and challenges from a trade union perspective
#4 PhD students, ahoy, the Student Volunteer lottery for the CSCW 2024 conference is now open! For my younger self, being an SV was a great way to get to know both the people and the practices in our community, so I recommend giving it a go if the timing and venue fit.
