Greetings 2023, our dear friends, and family
Greetings you wonderful humans! We started 2022 in the midst of many house projects and getting back into the world. We are happy to have some new additions to our home -- looking at you, dishwasher. We were fortunate to see our families in Montana/Utah, celebrate multiple weddings from our friends, and welcome Alex’s first nephew (hello, Callum!).
Sean had a very adventurous year. He took a huge new step, almost 40 years in the making: he was accepted to graduate school in architecture at Berkeley, which has been a dream since second grade. The pieces finally fit together in a way that felt right, so he and Alex are embarking on an exciting (and strenuous) journey for the next few years. His first semester went very well (despite an attempt by Covid to derail it) and he was very happy for the month-long break to end the year. He’s back at it in semester #2 now. To make time for it, he left his job of four years teaching middle school in San Francisco.
Spring was full of big events: Sean’s sister Jenny and her family visited during spring break and we had a great time introducing them to San Francisco. Sean officiated the wedding of our friends Tyler and Anna in Oregon and he couldn’t have felt more honored to be part of their beautiful day. Much of the year was spent wrapping up seemingly endless house projects, but we’re feeling extra cozy in our beautiful home. It’s already been almost two years!
Alex started a new role at a work management software company called Asana! After five years at Box, he made the difficult decision to embrace the unknown, the discomfort, and a new team. He remains close to his former coworkers and has been enjoying learning. This is Alex’s first job in San Francisco proper so he’s getting into the groove of commuting into the city.
Alex took a meditation workshop, binge-watched Heartstopper on Netflix, and has been cramming to his reading goal. (He didn’t reach his goal this year.) One of his favorite books of the year was Disability Visibility by Alice Wong.
The year was about travel (goodbye pandemic!) and family time. Alex visited his brother Sean in Portland. We caught up with Alex's extended family at a July reunion & saw his aunt Mary & uncle Roger in Whitefish. We also snuck some BBQ & joined his family in Kansas City for a lovely wedding. He also welcomed his parents to San Francisco for the Golden Gate Half Marathon. Unfortunately, before our Thanksgiving trip to Big Bear, we both caught COVID. But we still got to enjoy Sean's parents spending time with us in San Francisco for the Christmas holiday. We wrapped the year with a trip to LA to visit our friends Nate and David and then to Seattle to visit all those wayward souls who moved away from us during the pandemic.
Noah turned eight this year and he continues to be our charming boy. He spends a large part of his day sleeping mixed with migrating around the house for the best sunshine. Forgetting his age, he’s still full of excitement for tennis balls, squirrels, and fields of grass. He spent time with grandparents in Montana & Utah; so many adventures!
As we kick off this new year, we are grateful for our health, our home, our jobs, and all the friends and family in our lives. Hope all is well with you and yours this new year, and we’d love to hear from you soon. What’s a memory, show, book or song that brought you joy this past year? Wishing you all the very best 2023 and beyond!
Sending our love,
Sean, Alex, & Noah
