Patelograms return for: The Cherry Orchard Diaries

Hi folks,

It's been almost a year since I last sent one of these which feels a little surreal, but then what is time in Pandemic Land anyways? This is just a quick message to say that from Friday this newsletter will be back for at least a couple of months. I've been a bit gummed up when trying to write for quite while - a heady mix of long Covid exhaustion, imminent production demands and an almost comically absurd number of big family deaths in the last year and a half - but there is truth in the popular advice that any writing more makes writing easier so this is part of me rehabilitating myself and being able to deliver the things I am absurdly late on* as well as, hopefully, being interesting to you too.

The form of the newsletter will shift a little from what I've usually done as I'm going to use it to chart the process of the aforementioned imminent production: A sci-fi adaptation of The Cherry Orchard which begins its run in September. I don't think I've had a show run alongside the newsletter before so that'll be a novel situation for us all.

This Friday I'll start with talking about the origins of the piece and the process of the adaptation itself, then next week I'll look at what it is to be a writer during casting (actors remain my heroes, and I'm grateful for everyone who came in for this play), before documenting what I think might be useful or interesting to hear from rehearsals. That will be entirely focused on my role in it since it's a time that requires safety and discretion for the other creatives involved. If I've not had a breakdown, I'll then try and give a sense of what it's like to watch a show go into opening night and then on to another glorious city/venue.
