This Month on Party of One: Our 2023 Summer Season Finale!
Hey Party People!
It’s been awhile since I posted one of these! We’re back on the newsletter kick; it’s the best way to keep up with the show and let people know what’s going on. Expect one of these monthly once again.
Anyway, enough preamble; time for show stuff!
Last Month on Party of One
Frontier Scum with Christine Prevas
There is something… lurking… beneath the tunnels in the mines. Something violent, something furious, something alive what once was dead. But the scariest part? What’s above the ground might be scarier than what’s stirring below.
You’ll dig this one if you like: Weird West stories, Blade Runner, Cowboy Bebop, Supernatural, stories about sticking it to the corporations that have ruined our lives
The Fallen with Lin Codega
And lo, in the eyes of the Echoing Empress, Guild Le Grande fell from favor, and fell from grace. There was a long road back into her glory ahead of them…
You’ll dig this one if you like: Stories of gods and paladins, Spindlewheel microgrames, stories of redemption, god-human polycules, bisexual disasters
A Land Once Magic with Andre Rivera
In the distant future, after magic and technology rose and fell, new lives and new peoples make their way, in the shadows of the titans, as best they can…
You’ll dig this one if you like: Thundarr the Barbarian, All My Fantasy Children, cool worldbuilding, techno apocalpyse fantasy, Shadow of the Colossus, Death Stranding
HERO CATASTROPHE with Mark Kennedy
Two doomed souls passed through the star-gate, tricked by an uncaring employer into a death-march without a return. They will face their mortality in the place on the other side. Death will come for both of them. One will deny it; the other embrace it. This is not a story of hope.
You’ll dig this one if you like: Stories of doomed heroes; bittersweet endings; big, chaotic action scenes; Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
What’s Coming This Month
Autumn of Giants with Jayne Dent
The Giants that walk among us are going to their ancient place to rest. It is our mission to accompany them and ensure they’re safe in their journey.
Grasping Nettles with Carlos Cisco
A worldbuilding game of communities evolving over time. Set in the belly of a giant space beast, a town of scavengers schism and grow, and face an imminent crisis.
Till the Last Gasp with Alex Roberts
Our mid-year season finale! Two badass action heroes stare each other down, ready to do battle and settle their grudge once and for all.
Behind the Scenes
SAG-AFTRA/WGA Strike Guidelines
In case you missed it, SAG-AFTRA released new guidelines for podcasters. We stand in complete solidarity with our friends fighting for better working conditions, and want to take a moment to break down exactly how we’re addressing them.
To be clear, for the most part, we're unaffected. We're an indie show largely promoting non-struck work.
BUT, since we record/release 4-6 months out, there are some episodes we're either releasing now (recorded in March/April) or are recording now (for release in late 2023 or early 2024) that can or may mention some struck work.
In those cases, we're doing two things:
1, editing all references to struck work out of episodes currently recorded and set to be released
2, for episodes we're currently RECORDING, we're leaving any reference to struck work out of intros/outros and only promoting non-struck material
The reason we're doing that (as opposed to holding episodes entirely) is so guests can promote their other, non-struck work while still following the guidelines laid out by SAG-AFTRA.
This is all a weird delicate balancing act we're doing, and no one quite knows what the right approach is, but the reality is we'd rather be extra cautious in our approach out of solidarity than not. So that's what we're doing.
(Also, if you missed it on the recent episodes: Anyone who emails me proof of donation (any amount) to the Entertainment Community fund, which supports those impacted by the paused productions, gets a free digital edition of any single one of my games, plus a special unreleased Po1 live episode.)
Something I Liked, That You Might Too
Somehow, after 20 years, The Venture Bros ended, and I am very emotional about it. Maybe no single show has as firm an influence on my voice, maps so perfectly to my own creative journey, from edgelord-y teen to older adult making peace with failure. We got answers to questions, some all-time great off-hand dialogue, and one final goodbye to some of these weird, wonderful characters I’ve followed for my entire adult life.
Go Team Venture.
Until next time, thank you for reading. Remember to fight the forces of fascism every single day. Remember that self-love and self-care are radical, defiant act of resistance. And as always…
